Thomas Gaddis, author of the book Birdman of Alcatraz received a story by a prisoner named James Fogle. He put him in contact with Dan Yost, who fine-tuned the story. Yost tried for ten years to get it published. Everything came together once Yost showed it to film director Gus Van Sant. Dan Yost recalled, "I felt like a fool telling Jim that sooner or later something would happen, but it's interesting how things happen if you don't give up on them."
